Whether you pine for a house that is large and spacious or one that is small and contained, you certainly don't want one the is dark and cramped. Yet, so often this is what we see; poor allocation of space, ineffective colour choices, or thoughtless furniture placement can make any home, big or small, suffocating.

What can we do to avoid or remedy these common faux pas? Before thinking about giving up altogether and moving, try to pinpoint the cause of the problem and you may be able to intervene and turn it all around.

This is exactly what they did in the project we are about to take a look at. A home in Rome was completely transformed, thanks to the clever design of the architects at EF Archidesign, and all for a moderate price tag of 325,000RM. Let's take a look…

The living area

The living area is now free-flowing and bright. The white walls are an easy way to create a light and airy space. Next to the warm colour of parquet flooring, the white walls set the scene for a fresh, contemporary, and homely atmosphere.

The house quickly attains a distinct and welcoming character, something it was definitely lacking. The decor is kept minimal as not to clutter the new space.

From start to finish

Before the architects arrived on the scene with their impressive design expertise – even despite the available space – the interior was rather closed and oppressive.

It was a complete waste of space. The intervention sought to create an airy and light living environment. The placement of windows at specific points, alongside a freshened aesthetic, saw to it that they achieved exactly that.

The kitchen

A door leading from the living room provides access to the kitchen. White also reigns in this space and the spatial organisation is thoughtful and refined.

The fresh, contemporary look also has an air of country charm: a delicate balance. It's not exclusively white – well, almost – there's a grey benchtop and an assortment of stainless steel fixtures.

The bedroom

As per the M.O, simplicity is the operative word in the design of the bedroom. A beautifully upholstered bed sits between two wooden bedside tables.

The combination of the bright white, softer neutrals and timber – as we've seen in the other rooms – achieves a fresh and homely space of repose.

The kid's bedroom

Deviating slightly from the home's status quo, a touch of colour and fun permeates the kid's bedroom. The white and wood are met with bright pops of red and blue.

Master bathroom

The master bath is large and neatly organised, modern yet classic. Giving the space a glimmer of pizazz, the large mirror with an impressive gilded frame stands guard above the vanity.

The fixtures are modern and state of the art. A fully transparent shower steals the show and promises the ultimate in relaxation.

And there's more…

Oh wait, it has competition! Complete with a corner whirlpool bath, beneath the sloping ceiling, it's an absolutely charming bathroom

A second bathroom

That's not the only bathroom; the smaller guest bathroom is a touch more lively, thanks to a large mosaic that covers all four walls up to half height.

From start to finish, the renovated abode is bright and spacious: it's a job well-done. If you enjoyed this tour, you may also like to take a look here: A small but stylish white apartment.
