The bathroom is a fundamental element to any home. It should be a place of replenishment and relaxation. Still, the bathroom is often designed to be on the smaller side of the home’s layout. It can be difficult to maximise space and create aesthetic appeal. Many of us might even find ourselves putting the bathroom on the bottom of the priority list when it comes to decorating our homes because it is a private area even though we spend so much important time refining ourselves in this space. It is time we take a look at our bathrooms, no matter how small they might be and examine how we can both spruce things up and also make the bathroom feel a little bit more spacious. Here are six simple tips for making the best of the space in your small bathroom. Happy decorating!

Consolidate space with a shower rack

Another great way to keep clutter away and maximise your bathroom’s floor space is with the help of a good shower rack. It is a subtle improvement, but it can make a world of difference. The shower rack can help to sort all of your shower supplies and keep them from collecting mildew while sitting on the wet shower floor. The silver soap dispenser holders are another great way to add an element of sleekness to the bathroom while also helping to free up some counter space. You can’t go wrong with chrome or other metallic tones in the bathroom. They are likely to match other hardware and will keep the storage units from standing out and creating a more cluttered feel. Investing in great storage pieces for easy organisation is a critical element of creating more space in the bathroom, or any room really!

Be selective with your sink unit

Another bathroom implement that can feel inevitably bulky is the sink unit. We are here to tell you, however, that this does not have to be the case! Choosing a smaller sink unit can open up lots of new possibilities for storage or more simply, it can make the bathroom feel extra spacious. It also does not mean you’ll have to sacrifice style either. We love this petit metallic sink basin. It is installed on a simple wooden floating shelf. As a result, there is room for more storage shelving below. Its conveniently small size does not mean sacrificing a sink that would fit best with the rest of your bathroom’s décor. Today, there are styles and designs in bathroom appliances than ever, so don’t be afraid to be selective.

Timeless tile

Add both colour and pizzazz to your bathroom with tiling. This is a classic element of the bathing area dating back to the Romans and reminiscent of traditional Turkish thermal baths. Cover your shower with a glittery monochromatic style or try doing an entire wall in a collection of colours and patterns like the one featured in this example. It certainly is not a spacious bathroom, but its narrowness is transformed with the addition of this beautiful tiling. Tiles also do pretty well with water and moisture compared to many other decorative pieces, and they don’t take up any extra space! You can also opt for creating an artistic mural with tiles as the Romans often did. In fact, mixing and matching tile patterns is another great way to add dimension and create the illusion of space.

Floating shelves and clever storage

A great way to start creating more space in your bathroom is to eliminate bulky items and get storage units up off the floor. Floating shelves are a great way to do both while adding a stylishly minimalistic touch to the room. There are many varieties of floating shelves to choose from. We like this example because it shows how you can play with colour and geometry to personalize storage and help tie the colour scheme of your bathroom together with ease. These rectangular floating shelves also allow for more storage not only within the box itself but on the top too. There are really endless styles to choose from when it comes to floating shelves so you can easily find one that fits your decorative preferences. Other alternatives to a shelf or pantry which would take up floor space is to make best use of your medicine cabinet and invest in other innovative shelving options like this one by Fundamental.Berlin

Illuminate with the right lighting

Lighting is essential to maximising space in your bathroom. Not to mention that having great lighting in your bathroom will help you to groom yourself more easily and to keep the space clean of impurities. The ideal way to successfully illuminate your bathroom is with the help of natural light. Make the best use of your existing skylight or clerestory window by keeping it clean and uncovered. The clerestory window in this bathroom by Neostudio Architekci is quite small, but it makes a huge difference in illumination. If your bathroom has a more conventional window, keep curtains sheer to offer some privacy while still allowing the flow of light. Other ideas for lighting include muted options that take up as little space as possible. Halogen lights are great for small bathrooms because they provide a cosy glow without being particularly noticeable. Steer clear of lights that require a countertop or take up space on the floor. Go with lights that can be imbedded in the wall or ceiling instead.

Wall of mirrors

Last but not least, let’s talk about mirrors. They are a classic means of compounding light and space in any room. They don’t take up any extra space and have been used throughout history as a mechanism for creating the illusion of expansiveness. Choose a variety and placement in your bathroom that complements existing light. Repetition with mirrors or using multiple eclectic mirrors is a great trick for maximising the mirror’s reflective properties. This corridor-shaped bathroom is made to feel much wider with the addition of these mirrored cabinets. Combined with the right lighting and glossy tiles, the mirror is the last element in creating a visually pleasing and more spacious bathroom. Plus, in a bathroom with mirrors like this there is space for the whole family to brush teeth, tweeze, shave, or apply makeup all at the same time, which can be great for busy weekday mornings.
