As one of the world’s foremost cities London has a lot to offer, but an abundance of affordable property is not one of its endearing attributes.
Property prices in the UK’s capital are extremely high, and any space – no matter how obscure or rundown will be sought after. However, one positive aspect of London’s pricey real estate market is that this encourages creativity amongst architects as the city collectively strives to make use of all the available space.
Today we’re taking a look at one such creative endeavour, as we tour an incredible industrial-style home that was once a garage.
Let’s take a look at what London architects, Patalab Architecture have done with the space…
The home is sleek and modern in design, but reasonably understated. The large windows revealing the illuminated interior, as well as the floor-level lighting surrounding the home make for a very welcoming, inviting façade. As you may expect from a property that was once a garage there’s plenty of parking space adjacent to the home; an uncommon and sought after attribute in a crowded city such as London.
The dark wooden staircase with its floor level lighting is like a work of art! This beautiful addition to the home’s décor balances the more industrial elements of the design to give the home a more individual style.
The home’s ground floor consists of one vast, open-plan space with a decidedly minimalist aesthetic. The open-plan design, along with minimal furnishings and the respectable area that the property occupies emphasises space; creating a wonderfully open living environment.
The décor veers towards industrial due to the concrete floor and brickwork on the walls, but the effect is mediated – made softer – by the wooden panelling surrounding the stairs and the white colour of the walls.
The sofa that has been built into the concrete floor looks exceptional and gives the home a really unique character.
Looking at the dining area at eye-level it appears a pretty uninspiring space; the modern furnishings are absolutely minimal, with nothing else surrounding the dining table. However, the astonishing glass ceiling above is more than enough to give the area an impressive presence, as well as allowing vast amounts of natural light to permeate through the home.
Standing behind the stairs allows us to appreciate how the whole home fits together: to our left we have the dining area with the kitchen behind it, and to our right the living room leading to the study.
This vantage point also gives a clear perspective of how the home’s consistent colour scheme works together: the dark grey tones of the sofa, chairs, kitchen counter and windows work together to provide a contrast to the white background behind.
