While minimalist styles might be trendy now, there is something rather timeless about the baroque, neoclassical look of the 19th century that is hard to resist. Baroque style is flamboyant and unapologetic about it. It denotes a golden era in history linked to prosperity and aesthetic excellence. It is the definition of elegance and luxury as it was largely popularised by royalty. In addition to Italian religious establishments, it is most notably seen in the palaces of monarchs like the Habsburgs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. House yourself in lavish details like gold and crystal and you’re sure to feel like royalty yourself! Yet, it may not be so easy to put your finger on just how exactly this look might translate into modern times, and that’s where we come in. Today we will be exploring the lesser-discussed subject of baroque interior design and giving you some easy pointers on how you can cultivate it in your own home. Happy decorating!

Floors in neutral colours

Something that we must address in this guide is how to balance the over the top luxuriousness of baroque style within the bounds of contemporary interior design. By today’s standards, filling your home with colourful images of nature, gilded décor, and intricately carved furnishings might come off a bit too strong. Therefore, we suggest that in order to tastefully capture the beauty of the baroque look, you introduce some neutral elements to the look. These can help to temper some of the intensity of the look. One way to do this is to opt for neutral colours in the floors. This is especially ideal for the living room and bedroom where most of your baroque look is likely to take form. Cream tones with a hint of gold will work best to keep these neutrals in line with your baroque style. This room is a great example of how to execute a mix of neutrals with more luxurious details. The floors are neutral save for the minimal purple detailing, which works to tie the floor and the furniture together.

Wallpaper with classic & elegant patterns

The baroque aesthetic is positively rich in detail with small touches of opulence in every element of the interior. One place to indulge in this sense of sumptuousness is with the wallpaper. Opt for gold or neutral tones and elegant patterns for the best effect. Fruits or forest creatures are common images in baroque art, and this goes for wallpaper as well. Such is reminiscent of the feelings of bounty royalty hoped to convey to their guests at lavish palace banquets. The history of the motifs in baroque style runs deep, so subtle details like elegant wallpaper can speak volumes for you in your own baroque interior. This example does an excellent job at depicting what we mean. The repetitive neutral-toned floral pattern done in sections on the wall is quite baroque indeed. Also consider embellishing the details in your crown moulding for an even stronger effect.

Chandeliers & lamps

Another way to bring a little baroque into your interior is with the right chandelier. Many of us have dreamed of bringing grandeur to our homes with an intricate chandelier. Where other styles might require you to tone it down a bit, the baroque style easily allows you to indulge in this fantasy. In fact, the larger and more crystalline the better! As for lamps, try adding some fixtures with candle bulbs to give your home a touch of 19th century detail. Combining gold and crystal is another element you can get away with under this design concept. We love this exquisite chandelier by FinkeldeiPolstermöbel GMBH because it brings an element of historicism into the space and certainly conveys much of the grandiosity that can make baroque style so appealing.

Baroque-inspired furniture

To find baroque style furniture, don’t be afraid to do some hunting. Exploring flea markets and antique shops is likely to yield results on this. Baroque furnishings tend to consist of intricate details like carvings and hand painted portions. In particular look for dark wood, gold, and white. Chairs and headboards might include lavish upholstery in materials like richly coloured velvet. These things demonstrated the wealth and grandeur of their owners. If you want to carry this style throughout your entire home, don’t feel you have to shy away from including baroque style furniture in each room. Even the bathroom can become significantly more baroque with the addition of a baroque-style armchair. Putting such an item in your bathroom will likely make the same impression of your wealth and grandiosity as it would have centuries ago!

Small golden elements

As we mentioned earlier, it’s important to find ways to carry the baroque style into present times. This often means toning it down and combining it with more contemporary trends. If you’d like to start small, work with the details in your interior to add some little baroque touches. Baroque décor consisted of a lot of pure gold or gilded items. From candlestick holders to mirrors to headboards and crown moulding, the royalty of this era loved their gold. Therefore, one rule of thumb on putting some baroque into the details of your interior design is to look for small golden things. In the end the right combination of golden details will help you to give the perfect baroque touch to your interiors. For instance, the golden decal on this tub alone might not scream baroque style, but add a gold mirror and faucet and you’re in business!

Large imposing headboard

Lastly, to be in line with the baroque look you must make sure your bed is fit for royalty. If you were to visit on of the palaces of the great European emperors and religious officials who lived centuries ago, you’d notice how much emphasis was put on this. A large imposing bedframe will give the whole room a similarly grand feel. Go for a bedframe or headboard with intricately carved wood. A four-poster bedframe is also appropriate here. For something softer, try an upholstered bedframe like this one. Its cream colour also fits with a more contemporary variation of baroque style mentioned above. Combined with the golden details and crystal light fixture on the night table, this bedroom is positively contemporary baroque!
