When approaching home design, it can be done in a few different ways – choosing furniture, accessories, and colours that simply look attractive is one way, or using an existing pattern or decor theme to govern your decisions is another. However, when decorating with a certain colour in mind becomes a powerful tool that can be used to inspire emotions, create spacial illusions, or just set a particular atmosphere for any room. This is called colour psychology and it's used quite frequently in interior design to create healthy, beautiful, and distinctly unique homes.

Today on homify, we're taking you on a tour of a home that uses the colour red quite admirably. Created ad designed by Taller Estilo Arquitectura and dubbed Casa Santiago, this home is anything but quiet and quaint. In this Ideabook, we will see how Casa Santiago – located in Merida Yucatan, Mexico – perfectly uses red to stir up excitement without overdoing it.

Red rapture

The first area of the home we will look at is the kitchen and dining area. Right off the bat we can see the intensity of the colour red. In colour psychology, it is said that red, as the most intense colour, raises a room's energy level and pumps adrenaline like no other hue. It is used to stir up excitement, especially at night. When used in the living room or dining room, red draws people together and stimulates conversation. Taller Estilo Arquitectura has clearly utilized this principle when decorating the kitchen and dining area of this beautiful home, creating a strong first impression.

As we can see, the red is offset by the white ceiling, table, and area underneath the table. This is a very important attribute to the home, as too much red would be a distraction to the inhabitants and guests of the house.

The ideal atmosphere

The key to decorating any home with a particular colour requires great skill and finesse. You have to make sure that your colour choice is utilized enough to achieve the aesthetic you're looking for without overwhelming. The use of red in the kitchen and dining area is so rich that there needs to be a counterbalance in order to keep harmony in the home. So it only makes sense that this lounge, which is adjacent to the dining area, has less of this impact. Taller Estilo Arquitectura has used red with caution in designing, because if there's too much red in a home, it can bring restlessness and overstimulation.

This ideology is utilized perfectly in this nook of the house. The colour white is used here as a mood neutralizer. With just enough red peaking out from the dining area, we can still appreciate the boldness of red while taking it down a notch and mixing up the colours, creating a perfect harmony.

Luxurious outdoor bath

In the West, red is the symbolic colour of love and romance, according to colour psychology. In addition to the colour psychology ideals of the West, we can also use the ideals of Eastern schools of thought when decorating with colour. The Feng Shui energy of colour red is the energy of arousal – it's hot, passionate, rich, and celebratory. It signifies richness and luxury. In the Chinese culture, red is the colour of luck and happiness. In India, it is the colour of marriage. With all of this significance, it's really no wonder why Casa Santiago was designed with such striking red hues! Even on the exterior, we see the fantastic use of this pigment, albeit less intense.

From this bird's eye view of the luxurious outdoor bath, we can see small red accents in the colour of the door and in the window frames above. Because of the simple red accents, the calming and opulent atmosphere of the inner courtyard remain in full effect, but also remind us of the richness that lies indoors.

Elegance in the bedroom

Moving upstairs, we can still see the utilization of red, but this time it's more toned down, and with good reason.  In this image, we see the master bedroom. The bed sits on top of an ornamental rug with green and soft red hues, complementing the rest of the house quite well, but as we can see, red does not run rampant in this room.

The elegance of the bedroom shows in its design and decoration with abstract art. It's not overcrowded with accesssories and it utilizes more neutral colours to maintain a calmer atmosphere for relaxation. We can almost breathe in the fresh air coming through the giant sliding glass doors from the connecting terrace.

Redefining red

As we journey from the master bedroom to the adjacent terrace, we are met with even more remarkable reds – not to mention, a sweet lounge setup.

Again in this image, we can see subtle and strategic use of red hues. Notice how the red hues differ throughout the home to adapt to the rooms they're in. On the terrace, a calmer, wine-like shade of red is utilized to promote a classy, luxurious, and subsequently relaxed feeling. This hue is a great idea for the terrace, as it blends well with earth tones such as green and beige, as we can see perfectly exemplified here. The beige and white tile offsets the small red accents of the wall and cushions, and the red hues seem to tie the whole space together.

A notable washroom

As we know, accessories and accents really update a room, make it effortlessly stylish, and they pull the entire theme together. Red accessories pack a striking punch, but if the shade of red that's used is bright, then it should be used carefully. Taller Estilo Arquitecturas kept this in mind when designing the washroom of this red inspired home. An accent wall is the perfect place for red to come out and play without overpowering the space. Bathrooms are by nature some of the smallest rooms in the home, so choosing to paint only wall allows the space to breathe and not overwhelm. With only a red accent wall and complementing painting on the wall, this bathroom is transformed from drab white to fab! What's more, this design scheme can work with both modern and traditional designs, so if the interior design of the home ever changes, this bathroom won't have to.
