Clutter will find a way to infiltrate our lives, unless we resort to clever measures to keep it at bay. But don’t think that this is only true of the ‘working’ and ‘socialising’ areas in our homes, like the kitchen and living room, for the bedroom has also been known to become quite messy if one’s not careful.

Fortunately, there are numerous furniture and accessories designed to help keep our homes neat and tidy, including that age-old favourite piece: the bedside table.

However, far too many people worldwide see this furniture piece as nothing more than a simple landing pad; a place of rest for a night lamp, a book or two, and clock/cellular phone, etc. Why is this such an interior design sin? Because they don’t seem to realise that a bedside table, in addition to helping with storage, has the power to introduce a world of style into even the most boring bedroom.

Of course in order to achieve that, said table must be more than a simple square on four legs. It needs to bring in colour, pattern, texture, that je ne sais quoi that packs quite the style punch (while still helping out with storage).

So, in order to move away from bland pieces, let’s take a look at more unique ways in which bedside tables and nightstands can become the star attractions of the bedroom…

1. A bedside table for displaying décor

No need to save space for that table lamp? In this case, the bedroom’s lighting factor is taken care of by the wall sconces, meaning those bedside tables are free to be so much more than mere nightstands.

With a drawer for some valuables, the top surfaces are open to display a few select pieces that speak of the owner’s personality and style, while also ensuring additional colour for the room’s scheme.

Just ensure you don’t resort to a cluttered look – keep those pieces to three or four, no more!

2. Wicker that’s wickedly wonderful

In the spirit of trying new things, we hopped across this example that made use of a simple wicker basket turned upside down – and nothing else.

It’s simply, it’s subtle, yet still very functional, as it has space for a bedside lamp (if nothing else).

Keep in mind, however, that even though this look works here, it’s not advisable for the person who has a horde of bedroom accessories that needs storing away.

3. Mixing and matching your bedside tables

Who said that your bedside tables needed to be identical? In moving away from the norm, this enchanting example ensures a bit of character, plus unique style, by having two pieces that are clearly not the same.

So, what’s the winning formula here? Even though they look different, they are still of the same colours and style, ensuring a visual link between the two.

4. Floating pieces

It could be to save on floor space or for purely aesthetic reasons, but the fact remains that a lot of bedside tables are wall-mounted. Having them seemingly protrude out of the wall as seen here also ensures a clean, graceful look.

homify hint: The bed is the central feature of a bedroom, but in the absence of a headboard, you can use bedside tables to frame it. To do this, opt for an arrangement of small artworks above the table to create a focal point, effectively framing the bed. This decorating trick also works well where there is only enough space for a small bedside table or two, or a large bedroom with minimal furniture.

5. A bedside dresser

We love the idea of having a dresser (of the right height) stand in for a traditional bedside table. The matching floating shelves neatly packed into the wall niche above ensures additional storage- and display space.

6. Bedside tables in a Scandinavian style

Elegantly shaped, these Nordic-style pieces add some simple charm to the room while keeping the colour scheme clean and neutral. However, they can also function quite perfectly in other areas of the house (like the hallway, as a credenza in the living room, etc.), in case you feel like giving your interiors a makeover and swapping out a few pieces.

7. Rustic wooden crates

Who says they’re only good for firewood? These old crates are casual, cool and bring in a rustic/vintage touch. And let’s not overlook the fact that their dark hues become quite prominent in this otherwise light-toned bedroom.

8. Vintage luggage turned focal pieces

Who knew a few vintage suitcases stacked atop one another could make such a spectacular bedside table? The great thing about trying this at home is that the height can be varied by adding or subtracting pieces, and the luggage can also double as storage for infrequently used items.

9. Repurposing an old chair

Speaking of using one piece for something else, ever thought of giving an old, unused chair a second chance in life by turning it into a bedside table? In the spirit of double duty, the chairs can also be cleared off and moved to the dining area should extra guests arrive!

10. Exploring other materials

Just because the rest of your bedroom’s furniture is in one material doesn’t necessarily mean your nightstands should follow suit. These mirrored cabinets complement the classic look of the bed and décor splendidly while ensuring a touch of shine.

Food for thought: would similar tables in wood (mimicking the brown of the headboard and bedspread) have had the same style punch? We vote a firm “no”!

11. Playing with shapes

A mixing and matching of shapes can be too busy if you’re not careful, or it can ensure some character for the room, as shown here. So don’t feel like you need to stick to the done-to-death square shapes of tables.

Introduce some curves into that room with circular designs as shown here – just ensure they flow with the rest of the room’s colour scheme.

12. Bringing nature indoors… and making it stylish

Who knew nature had such style power? These old tree stumps have found their new calling in the form of bedside tables, after being given a new look and colour. This idea is a sure hit, considering the fact that the bed is also made of repurposed wood (pallets).

13. Fitting in fabulously

Of course not all bedside pieces were made to stand out. This minimalist design enjoys a less-is-more look, and although it doesn’t become the focal piece in the room, it doesn’t fade into the background either.

Ample surfaces for a lamp plus a few goodies, drawers to help with storage, and a simple clean-cut style for a contemporary touch – bravo!

14. Colours that pop

It might be tiny, yet this modern/Scandinavian-style piece ensures star power with its sunny personality.

Notice how that bright yellow is complemented in the bedspread’s pattern – like we always say, it’s the little things that count!
