Who says an all-white space is unpractical? Imagine it as a perfectly blank canvas just waiting for it to add your personal style – exciting, definitely, but also a bit daunting.

And with a white room comes a few questions – what colours pair well with whites and off-whites, how do I create visual interest and avoid monotony, which furniture pieces are perfect for such a soft colour scheme…

Relax. Because when it comes to styling a white bedroom that is far from boring, we have done our homework.

1. The white bedroom: Choose your tints

Think that selecting white for your interiors is the easy way out? Think again, because there are a myriad of different whites to play with! Some have warm finishes, others provide a cooler undertone… so, how do we select the right one to make our bedroom seem like a cloud instead of a hospital?

Keep these three things in mind:

1. The white’s undertones

2. The bedroom’s natural lighting

3. The finish.

White with a yellow undertone ensures a warmer and creamier appearance; blue undertones provide a crisper look. And a bedroom with lots of natural light already looks warmer, meaning you can opt for a cooler tint of white to balance it out.

And keep in mind that bedrooms with LED or fluorescent lighting can look slightly cold, so opt for a warmer hue.

2. The white bedroom: Playing with colour combos

Have you found your perfect white for the bedroom? Now you need to introduce it into the space.

If you’ve selected a white with warm and sandy undertones, opt for earthy tints elsewhere in your bedroom to ensure a colour palette with a neutral look. If you’ve picked a crisp, more brilliant white, layer in more saturated splashes of hue. Bold blues are ideal for a nautical vibe, while pinks and yellows with black accents are perfect for a Scandinavian style.

In terms of colour pairings, you have three palettes to choose from:

1. Complementary: Pairs any two colours opposite one another on the colour wheel for high contrast (like green and violet), but is best used in small doses.

2. Split complementary: Matches one colour with two colours adjacent to its complementary tint on the colour wheel (like green with red and purple). This is very easy to accomplish.

3. Tonal: Decorating a space with tones from the same colour family (all blues or all greens, etc.). This is perfect for creating a relaxing or soothing space, yet it’s important to add patterns and textures for some character.

3. The white bedroom: Find the right furnishings

The easiest way to let a white colour palette get chaotic is to adopt the “anything goes” attitude with regards to furniture. Always work with a theme for your accessories and furniture, regardless of the colour palette.

Let your bedroom’s furniture show off the space’s personality. Pieces designed with clean lines, hard corners and colder materials will portray a modern, contemporary vibe in an all-white room. Likewise, if you want your bedroom to have a cosy and inviting appearance, rather opt for weathered, whitewashed finishes with linen-covered chairs.

And the one element to beautifully anchor all the elements in your white bedroom? A rug. Just be sure to pick one in the right size so that it doesn’t look out of place.

The rule of thumb for a bedroom rug is to have it cover the flooring surface of the entire bed, as well as the adjacent nightstands, plus leave around 46-61cm of space, but not encroach upon any main walkways.

4. The white bedroom: Strike a balance

When styling your white bedroom, the urge will always be there to stay in line with the soft colour palette – fight it! A bright pop in a neutral space goes a long way! Keep the 60-30-10 rule in mind to strike the perfect balance.

• 60% of your room is made up of the primary colour palette (in this case, white) which covers the largest surfaces like floors, walls, ceilings, etc.

• 30% is the secondary colour palette, reserved for furniture and soft furnishings.

• 10% is your accent colour which can be made up of one focal piece (like artwork), or a series of three to five smaller items that add up to 10% (accessories like a vase, nightstand, scatter cushions, etc.).

5. The white bedroom: Add some greenery

Not only do we recommend adding plants and flowers to your white bedroom to break up the neutral colour scheme, but also because of all the advantages like scent and fresher air. Think about how many hours you sleep at night – that is when the power of your bedroom’s plants will work to boost your physical health and state of mind.

For a stylish, botanical feel (which is so on-trend right now), you have two choices:

• Go with exotic-inspired varieties with palm leaves, banana plants and succulents;

• Or a country feel with potted herbs on your bedroom’s windowsill, a nightstand, etc.

6. The white bedroom: Pick the perfect artwork

Art is one of the most personal pieces you can bring into a room, especially a private space like your bedroom. However, for a white colour palette, there are still a few considerations.

If your bedroom is very busy with lots of accessories and furnishings, one oversized piece of artwork is enough. But when it comes to bedrooms that are either lacking in interesting architectural features or have one focal piece which grabs all the attention (like an exposed brick wall), a gallery wall can work wonders. Consider hanging up some framed photographs and/or smaller paintings to add interest to the room.

Let’s darken that white colour palette just a tad with homify’s best grey bedroom ideas.
