We are all guilty of hoarding in one form or the other! Many of us experience difficulty in throwing away the most useless items, just in case we might need it someday. Today on homify we tackle clutter, how to clear it out, what to get rid of and how to keep your space neat and tidy!

Often we feel an emotional connection to the most random objects and just do not want to get rid of things that we might not have used in years! Cleaning up and reducing clutter can be applied to any space throughout the home from the kitchen to the bedroom! Let's get started with this task!

Sponge dish

The first room we look at today is the kitchen. Ever thought of how often you replace the simplest of items such as a dishwashing sponge? They are most likely sold in bulk packs of about four, but we seem to use the sponges until they look disgusting.

This is a clean-up tool that we use daily and has a short lifespan, so instead of using sponges until the look gross, consider replacing your sponges every two weeks or even more often depending on the amount of washing up you do daily. This will get you one step closer to a cleaner tidier looking kitchen!

Toothbrush

Next up, we have a look at the bathroom! Here we zone in at the toothbrush storage area. How often do you replace yours? The lifespan of the average toothbrush is approximately three months. Most of us use a toothbrush well passed that time frame and we often forget to replace this essential hygiene tool!

An easy way to remember to replace your toothbrush regularly is to buy a four pack of toothbrushes and store them in your bathroom cabinet. So go on and discard that old toothbrush you've had for two years already! It's about time to get rid of that and you know it!

Worn out shoes, clothes and underwear

Have you ever noticed how many pairs of shoes you still hang onto even though the sole is worn out, and you cannot wear them anymore? The same goes for that tattered jersey or those stretched out pairs of underwear that just takes up space in your closet!

Create space in your closet by giving away clothing that is still in a good condition, but no longer fits you or your personal style and throw away the broken or worn out clothing! Don't think twice just because you might wear it again, chances are if you haven't worn it in a year… you probably won't wear it again!

Old magazines

When you subscribed to three or four different magazines you probably didn't think about what you would do with the old issues after a year! The stacks just seem to increase each month and you've read them all, so what do you do? How about taking the issues that you have accumulated each year and bind them together! This will save you space and time!

Just think how often you look everywhere for a magazine that has a particular recipe in that you've been dying to try out! This great idea will ensure that all your back issues are housed in one file! And how about this minimalist shelf by Abode Co.Ltd.? Decluttering is easier then you thought, right?

Old technology

Old technology definitely takes up a lot of space in a home! Maybe it's that old Hi-Fi system that cannot be fixed or even that clunky television from the 1980's that is broken. Ask yourself why you still hang on to these ancient pieces of junk? It's just gathering dust and taking up space! Take it to a scrap yard to get rid of it once and for all! Now replace that with something effortlessly cool and minimalist, taking up less space but still adding some entertainment to your home!

Expired make up and medicine

Your medicine cabinet is often filled with those one time prescriptions that only last a short period of time. Chances are if we need the items again, they will probably be expired! Now is a good time to get rid of these old medicines that we accumulated over time!

The same thing can happen with make-up. How often do you use foundation? How long have you had that bottle in your make up bag? It's time to throw out that mascara that is filled with clumps or that eyeshadow that just makes your eyes itch! There's no time like the present!

Old batteries and light bulbs

We all have that one box filled with old light bulbs and batteries! Clean out the clutter by checking which items work and which ones need to be thrown away or recycled. Once you determine the items that can be thrown away, you can now replace them with fresh new items in storage! Light bulbs and batteries of any size will always come in handy, so it's necessary to have extra in stock just in case!

Old bed linen and towels

For how many years have you held onto be linen or towels? Your bed linen may have changed colour already and those towels are now full of holes and even be reduced to rags! These items just take up extra storage space in the home that can be used for fresh and new bed linens instead!

Throw out your old faded sheets for new cotton ones and you may even experience better sleep! Towels have a lifespan too and once they no longer dry with one wipe it may be time to reduce them to dust off rags!
