Porto Alegre boasts one of the largest and most populated metropolitan areas in Brazil. Over the years, the famous freshwater lagoon has fueled the growth of industry and commerce in area. Though the city was officially established in 1772, its history dates back to several decades before. Attracted by its location and prospects people from all over the world gather here. This is a phenomenon Porto Alegre is observing from its very inception. The cosmopolitan nature is palpable everywhere you go today. It is only natural that the city’s architecture would be affected by this cultural diversity. From the majestic structure of Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana to the avant garde design of Iberê Camargo Foundation, the city’s vista reveals a medley of buildings and styles that is totally unique.
Stefani Arquitetura, spearheaded by Luciana Stefani, is one of the new generation of architects helping city dwellers to realise their dreams of building a home in Porto Alegre. The following is one of its much appreciated creations. Be with us as we take a brief tour of a stylish courtyard planned by Stefani Arquitetura.
The project included refurbishing a courtyard followed by the set up of an outdoor entertainment zone. What once was a small and cluttered space consisting of a gloomy kitchen and nondescript swimming pool transformed itself into a glamorous waterside entertainment area. Luciana Stefani used her ingenuity, considerable knowledge and experience to bring about this transformation.
The house is located in Lindoia district of Porto Alegre. The owners of this house wanted to build a cosy space fitted with modern facilities. This is to be used for family gatherings at the end of the day or during the weekends. The space available was a mere 55 sq metres. Luciana Stefani renovated this space true to the traditions of the country. A touch of romanticism is apparent in this otherwise rustic surrounding.
The once dreary kitchen is replaced with a fashionable barbecue zone. Set along a wall, the kitchen is small but does not lack facilities. The presence of the washing machine shows its multifaceted use as a makeshift laundry.
The colourful brick façade of the barbecue section creates a nice contrast with the subtle white kitchen décor. The dining space is decorated in lively colours. Traditional furniture made of wood and natural fibre give it a unique touch. The square shaped dining table, flanked by suitably modest country style chairs, is befitting the space. The trellis above increases its charm.
The kitchen and dining area are not the only features of this outdoor entertainment facility. If you want to secure a peaceful corner and soak in the beauty of the surroundings, this is a perfect place to do so.
The understated décor encourages repose and relaxation – you can just imagine taking a seat on this simple but cosily cushioned bench and reading a book, or just letting your mind wander.
The former swimming pool has been replaced with a spa and hot tub. This helped in creating a more expansive looking courtyard. Native itaúba wood is used to build a stylish and elevated sundeck. It is the focal point of the garden which also contains a modern hot tub.
Beautiful candle holders, wicker baskets etc are strategically placed on this sundeck increase the beauty of this outdoor space.
A couple of reclining chairs are seen scattered on the ground. When the sun sets behind the towering buildings of Porto Alegre, it feels charming to lie down here and see the changing faces of the sky. After a hectic day’s work, this is a time to relax. It is a brief respite to sit here and enjoy the peaceful surrounding before immersing in a whirlwind of activities once again.
A repose like this can rejuvenate your mind and body. It prepares it to encounter the future with refreshed body and a positive frame of mind. When getting close to nature is becoming a luxurious proposition for city bred people, a garden and relaxation zone like this appear to be a blessing indeed.
