When you think of a dwelling made of concrete, you probably don’t imagine a vibrant and hospitable atmosphere along with it. Concrete sounds cool and sterile, words that describe the opposite of what you would want in a home. It takes a special team of architects and designers to turn this assumption on its head.

The talented folks at Hangul House certainly fit the bill with this simple family home in Korea. While designer homes can sometimes feel intimidating in their sophistication, what we find most appealing about this house is that it feels completely liveable. The beauty is in the details, and the concrete materials used throughout actually provide a dynamic backdrop. We hope you’ll join us for a closer look at this marvellous space!

Industrial minimalism

The industrial style exterior is quite simple in design. It is made primarily of concrete; the black balcony and the wooden accenting on the second storey stand out as the façade’s most striking features.

There are large picture windows, which invite plenty of sunshine into the interior. Let’s head inside.

Functional children's play space

The concrete feature wall in the interior actually appears soft and ethereal with the help of the sunshine emanating in from the windows on the opposite wall.

The large shelving unit on the right side of the room conveniently stores books and toys. This transitional space in front of the kitchen makes for a great play space for the youngsters of the family.

Dazzling white kitchen

When we shift our orientation around, we see this beautiful white L-shaped kitchen. The design team kept things simple here by using handle-less kitchen fronts, and the darker cupboards along the right side of the room make the space feel grounded. There is plenty of counter space for prepping dishes and whipping up culinary storms.

Cosy little dining corner

Off of the kitchen is this cosy little dining space. The mix of different styles of furniture gives this nook a particularly homey feel.

Things are left feeling practical and utilitarian in a charming way thanks to the timber and white colour tones present here. Plus, the shelf makes good use of vertical space.

Study with a view

On the second floor there is a spacious study with an excellent view and access to the terrace outside. It would be easy to get creatively inspired whilst gazing out at the vast view of the surrounding countryside.

The large windows easily illuminate the space, and the muted grey wall colour helps to balance the effect of such ample sunlight.

Efficient closet space

While the closet itself isn’t very large for two people, the organisational system works to efficiently maximise what space there is.

There are multiple compartments and dividers to categorise clothing and to ensure that everything that needs to be hung has a place. The full-length mirror in the corner completes the setup.
