Aayam Consultants have built themselves a solid reputation for designing spacious houses that combine eastern and western aesthetics. With this large, four-floor house, a project deemed the 'Premium Residence', we see that the rooms and spaces boast sophisticated eastern decor, and have been smartly modularised, creating as many cosy, private spots inside as possible.

From the outside the house is reminiscent of the layered housing designs popular along the USA's west coast in the 1970's: modern with hard edges, jutting angles, split-level staircases and a myriad of broken up parts – each offering their own atmosphere for living, working and lounging.

Located in the busy residential Panchkula region, in Haryana, India, the house is also large enough that it blends in but also stands out as one of the most prominent and modish of the district's buildings. So, let's start by looking at the house's front aspects.

Natural style

The facade of the home adheres to wholesome beauty standards – really, the epitome of any good modern style, which channels the trend to get back to natural-looking, lasting structures. A large portion has been constructed using high-quality woods, including a sturdy slit fence around the perimeter. From the outside, we are confronted by the house's robustness, and can just imagine all the welcoming nooks within.

Another thing to mention is the fact that this house is meant to be close to the neighbourhood, with several large decks facing the street, so you may sit out and say hello to the world as you sip your morning coffee – a really ideal design for a family house.

Relaxation space

We start off with this as the first of the house's rooms to be showcased because it manifests perfectly what Aayam Consultants do with their architecture: create restful, creative, homey spaces. This room in particular seems to understand that sometimes you just a need a small place to sit and chill out.

The half-wall is of the same deep chocolate wood used in places throughout the house, and features a block-lit design with several, eastern-inspired ceiling lamps. From reading to working, to taking a private phone call, this space's purpose is to be flexible – yet always comforting.

The rec room or office

Now, this is a home obviously designed to be big enough to be inhabited by several people, and this office-lounge provides yet another place for people to hide away or socialise, depending on their mood!

In the small right hallway, no space has been wasted, and the architects have constructed a neat little bar nook looking out a large window, bringing a coffee house feel into the home.

Rock the space

Despite its large size, you may have noticed by now that this house is far from cavernous.

At this entrance, we have a compact living space with a wall of thin, charcoal stacked rocks – equipped with an entertainment centre of light wood – so folks can watch TV, nap on the sofa or greet new guests with the organic sense of ease provided by a wall made entirely of beautiful, natural stones.

Split-level stairs

No split-level house can happen unless you get the split-level stairs right – and Aayam nails it. The wooden steps have been polished to a rich cherry hue, and the bannisters, a deep chocolate to match the cupboards, make for an unexpectedly complimentary contrast.

The use of glass between stair and bannister lets the wood shine and, along with that enormous picture window, really opens up what might have been a claustrophobic space. Lastly, the flower bed to the right of the staircase and the bamboo in the window are just the types of decorous details that showcase the eastern habit of using nature to cement an air of inner calm.

Social simplicity

The modern backyard terrace has been perfected here. This is truly a space made for people to socialise and move through, with large flat surfaces for standing around, dancing, sitting or placing food for the barbecue, and large patio doors mean folks can lounge inside while still being part of the outside ambience.

Again, we have those beautiful rock walls to the left, and an upper deck where people can look down on the patio below. This photo is perfect to conclude a tour of a house that gives a graceful nod to the virtues of an east-west aesthetic combining an attention to real spatial harmony and pure modernism – sincerely a premium residence.
