Awarded the Japanese renovation of the year grand prize in 2014, this interior, designed By Renon, took the lack-luster shell of an existing apartment and turned it into a playful and vibrant home. With a small budget, they sought to create a functional and fun family home for the young couple and their children.

Eschewing trends and the conventional priority that is given to adult-centred homes, the designers instead crafted a series of spaces that are child-friendly and child-inspired. Let's step inside and wander through these bright and fascinating spaces!

Before

A quick glimpse at a 'before shot' reveals just how impressive the makeover was – the award sure was well deserved! This space appears significantly smaller, and not to mention drab!

Beckoning transformation, the aesthetic is dated, and the spatial configuration doesn't attain the level of connectivity we have come to know and desire in our contemporary living environments.

The living space

Whoa, what a change! The designers describe the theme of the home as a 'fairy tale', and to them this fairy tale space was to be a space for children.

This imaginative and colourful open-plan living space feels both divided and connected. Walls with large openings, changes in flooring, feature walls; each of these elements acts to delimit in as much as they mediate.

Blues and yellows punctuate the white space. A natural element is introduced in the form of the timber flooring and the gentle, organic curves. But perhaps most prominent is the wallpapered central beam. The stripy pattern adds a interesting focal point in the space and breaks up the large volume.

The kitchen

The kitchen – housed behind the large, arched opening – doesn't stray from the playful aesthetic. The timber cabinetry in accompanied by a yellow mosaic bench top, and completed with a row of bunting – it's an absolute delight!

A sense of scale

The play with scale is wonderful! Standing next to a large adult-sized arch, a smaller child-sized opening provides access to the children's room. Complete with a ship-like portal above, it is a dreamy and imaginative space – the perfect retreat for the child's mind!

The children's bedroom

Stepping inside the children's room, we can see that the reasonably conventional form is decked out with the same blue wallpaper that is applied to the outside, creating a fun and playful space. The natural timber of the floor is mirrored in the exposed timber ceiling.

From start to finish, the home has been imbued with a light, bright, and most of all, fun quality! What a delightful transformation. If you're after another great tour, take a look at A Stunning Japanese Home.
