It’s easy to marvel at lavish homes created on a huge a budget – and don’t get the wrong idea, we like to do that too – but it’s also important to examine the more typical projects; taking into account important factors such as limited space that affect the design choices of many homeowners.
Today we’ll be examining a compact a home by Donakaza: Brazilian architects that pride themselves on simplicity and functionality. Let's take a look…
Space is a limiting factor here, and yet there’s still room enough for a dining table that seats five! Pushed up against to wall to avoid infringing on hall space, it sits neatly to the side of the room.
Notice the mirror completely covering the wall behind it, a great trick for making a smaller room feel more spacious.
Turning to the left in this open plan abode we see the living room area, complete with a comfortable couch and eye-catching shelving.
An attractive addition to the room, the shelf effectively extends the living room space so that the sofa fits in the allotted area without looking out of place, simultaneously, it serves to divide the compartmentalised areas of the home and define the living room space.
This compact kitchen is still fully equipped with all the necessary amenities and ample storage space. The second countertop adjacent to the living room area provides extra seating, and the yellow stools – just out of view here – add some interesting colour to the room.
The countertop serves another important purpose, as with the shelving in the living room space it acts a means of dividing and defining the different areas of the home.
The large window facing directly into the kitchen space fills the area with light. Notice how perfectly the sink and washing machine fit into the allotted space; detailed planning has left not an inch of wasted space.
Although small, the space in the bathroom is used to its fullest thanks to the shelving. Elegantly styled and eye-catching, it detracts from the room’s compact size.
The large mirror adds more light to the room, and the cupboards under the sink assure that there’s no shortage of storage space.
Wait, there’s more… The hidden treasure in this apartment, the balcony, means the owners can step out for a little sunshine and air.
Here, the carefully crafted open plan design has really maximised the apartment’s potential, but there are other means of getting the most out your available space. Have a look at this guide to find out more.
